Temporary Successor to Cardinal Winning Named

GLASGOW, Scotland, SEPT. 6, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Scottish Catholic leaders have appointed a temporary successor to run the archdiocese of the late Cardinal Thomas Winning, the Ananova agency reported.

Monsignor John Gilmartin has been named as the new administrator of the Archdiocese of Glasgow. He will oversee the day-to-day running of the office until a full-time successor to the late cardinal is appointed.

Monsignor Gilmartin, 59, succeeds Monsignor James Clancy who took on the role of administrator immediately after the cardinal´s sudden death from a heart attack on June 17.

The College of Consultors, a group of 12 senior priests of the archdiocese, said the Vatican was notified of the change via the papal nuncio´s office in London.

Monsignor Gilmartin was born in Glasgow and studied for the priesthood at St Peter´s College in Cardross in Dunbartonshire between 1962-1968. He was ordained June 28, 1968. He has been working as a parish priest at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Cardonald.
