Bishop Ryan of Kildare Submits Resignation

MAYNOOTH, Ireland, SEPT. 16, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Laurence Ryan of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin has submitted his resignation to John Paul II.

Bishop Ryan, 70, has been bishop of Kildare for 14 years. He will stay on until a successor is named, possibly within a year, the Catholic Communications Office said in a statement.

The resignation was announced over the weekend at Masses.

Bishop Ryan is a native of the parish of St. Mullins, County Carlow, and was ordained to the priesthood in June 1956.
