Ossory Priest New Rector of Irish College in Rome

DUBLIN, Ireland, OCT. 3, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Father Liam Bergin, a priest of the Diocese of Ossory, has been appointed rector of the Pontifical Irish College, Rome.

He succeeds Monsignor John Fleming who held the post for the past eight years.

Father Bergin, 41, is a native of Ballacolla, County Laois, was ordained a priest in 1985, after having studied at St Patrick´s College, Maynooth, and the Pontifical Irish College.

Father Bergin has a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He acted as director of formation in the Irish College from 1993 to 1997 and has been vice rector since 1997.

The Irish College was founded in 1628. It now has 19 seminarians and 42 postgraduate students in residence.
