2 Americans Named to Pontifical Council for Social Communications

WASHINGTON, D.C. NOV. 7, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Coadjutor Bishop Joseph A. Galante of Dallas, Texas, has been appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Monsignor Francis Maniscalco, director of communications for the U.S. bishops´ conference, has been appointed a consultor to the same council.

Joseph Galante was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in May 1964. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of San Antonio, Texas, in October 1992, bishop of Beaumont, Texas, in April 1994, and coadjutor in Dallas in November 1999.

He has served as chairman of the U.S. bishops´ Communications Committee since January.

Monsignor Maniscalco was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, in 1971. Among his assignments was editor of the diocesan newspaper, The Long Island Catholic.

He was appointed director of the Office of Media Relations of the bishops´ conference in 1993. Among his responsibilities, he acted as national media coordinator for the 1995 papal trip in the United States. He was appointed director of communications in 1995.
