Trafficking and Smuggling of People Is Focus of Forum

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, NOV. 9, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The annual Caritas Europa Forum on Migration is focusing on ways to combat the trafficking and smuggling of human beings.

More than 90 experts on migration are attending the three-day event that began here today.

The «vast majority of the estimated half a million migrants crossing the border into Western Europe each year are either trafficked or smuggled. Women are most vulnerable to such exploitation,» a Caritas statement explains.

«Those fleeing persecution are forced into such routes and exposed to many dangers, in large part due to the inadequacy of current migration procedures,» the statement adds.
