16.5 Million Have Participated in Papal Audiences

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 19, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has met with 16.5 million people in his Wednesday general audiences, the Vatican Press Office said today.

Today´s general audience was the last of the year. In 2001 the Pope received 550,000 pilgrims in the traditional midweek audiences. During the Jubilee Year 2000, John Paul II received 1,463,500 people at the audiences.

The highest number, 1,585,700, attended during the first full year of his pontificate, 1979.
