In statements published Sunday by Notimex, Tijuana Bishop Romo Muñoz said that before extraditing Arellano to the United States, the Mexican government should ask him to shed light on the crimes of which he is accused in Mexico, among them his alleged participation in the cardinal´s murder.

Cardinal Posadas Ocampo was killed on May 24, 1993, in Guadalajara´s International Airport. According to a report, which Mexico´s public prosecutor hoped would be regarded as final, the cardinal´s death was accidental, resulting from confusion between bands of drug dealers.

The report was full of unanswered questions. Other public personalities have cast doubt on the conclusions, convinced that the cardinal´s death was an execution.

On Saturday, special forces of the Mexican army arrested Arellano and confirmed the death of his brother Ramón, regarded as the leaders of the violent Tijuana cartel, accused of sending tons of drugs to the United States.

The United States has issued a warrant of arrest for Benjamín Arellano Félix, accused of conspiracy and other crimes.
