Pastors Recall Sept. 11 Attacks

BALTIMORE, Maryland, SEPT. 8, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Religious leaders and clergy were looking to draw moral lessons as the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approached.

Baltimore Cardinal William Keeler, addressing students and families at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, noted the victims were from many economic, social and religious backgrounds.

«They were American. They were you and me and all of us, and our hearts were profoundly troubled by what happened on that day,» Cardinal Keeler said, according to the Associated Press.

President George W. Bush had called for «National Days of Prayer and Remembrance,» asking all Americans to gather in their places of worship over the weekend to honor the dead and pray for world peace.

The U.S. Catholic bishops’ conference developed a commemorative program for churches which includes prayers and fasting.
