The decree of beatification was read last Dec. 20 by John Paul II.

Alberione was born on April 4, 1884, in northern Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1907. He founded the Pauline family, which is composed of five religious congregations, four secular institutes and an association of lay cooperators.

Father Alberione died in 1971 at age 87. John Paul II proclaimed him venerable on July 25, 1996. The miracle of the cure of Mexican María Librada González of a pulmonary thromboembolism, attributed to his intercession, was recognized in 2002, opening the way for his beatification.
