CELAM Meets to Elect New Directorate

TUPARENDA, Paraguay, MAY 13, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Ordinary General Assembly of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) is meeting in Tuparenda this week until Friday, to elect a new directorate.

Over these four days, 9 cardinals, 16 archbishops, and over 40 bishops will study the revision of «CELAM’s New Global Plan for the Period 2003-2007.»

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Bishops, and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, is to open the assembly with a talk on «Directive for the Pastoral Ministry of Bishops.»

Bishop Jorge Enrique Jimenez Carvajal, retiring president of CELAM, was to address the participants, before the assembly heard the reports of the delegates of the different Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Before concluding, the General Assembly is scheduled to discuss and approve the administration of the 131 programs included in CELAM’s Global Plan for the Period 1999-2003, entitled «Encounter with the Living Jesus Christ in the Horizon of the Third Millennium.»
