According to its statutes, the pontifical council «brings the pastoral concern of the Church to bear on the special needs of those who have been forced to leave their native land or who do not have one. It also sees to it that these matters are considered with the attention they deserve.»
The Vatican press office announced the appointment Saturday.
Archbishop Stephen Fumio Hamao presides over the council. These cardinals are also on the council: Anthony Bevilacqua of Philadelphia; Georg Sterzinsky of Berlin; Adam Maida of Detroit; Aloysius Ambrozic of Toronto; Geraldo Agnelo of São Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and Pedro Rubiano Sáenz of Bogota, Colombia.
