Native Brazilian Named Auxiliary of Newark

NEWARK, New Jersey, JUNE 27, 2003 (ZENIT.org).- John Paul II named Vocationist Father Edgar da Cunha, pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Parish here, as auxiliary bishop of the Newark Archdiocese, the Vatican press office announced.

The bishop-elect was born in Riachao do Jacuipe Bahia, Brazil, in 1957 and was ordained a priest in 1975.

The Newark Archdiocese has 1.3 million Catholics, 339 priests, 248 permanent deacons and 1,633 religious.
