The John Paul II International Award, which amounts to $50,000, will be conferred annually. The grant aims to contribute to the promotion of the new evangelization, justice and peace, and respect for human rights.

The institution of the award is part of a larger ACN strategy to promote peace and reconciliation worldwide.

In 1947, Premonstratensian Father Werenfried van Straaten founded ACN to support the Church wherever it faced difficulties in its mission due to lack of religious freedom or financial means. The Dutch priest died last year at age 90.

The Germany-based organization has affiliates in 17 countries.
