Addressing a message Monday to the 3rd World Congress of Families, meeting in Mexico City, Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo said that «only in the family, based on matrimony, is there hope for the grandeur, dignity and future of humanity.»
The president of the Vatican dicastery called on world leaders to act with the necessary uprightness, because the destiny of nations is in their hands.
«You are the architects of society, and this should not be replaced by any political ideology,» the cardinal said. He said the family is the patrimony of humanity, and not limited to religion.
The cardinal’s message marked the start of the three-day congress, attended by 3,500 participants from civil and social organizations of more than 50 countries, as well as representatives of various religions.
The theme of the event is «The Natural Family and the Future of Nations: Growth, Development and Freedom.» A message sent by John Paul II, quoted in the Mexican press, defends the family against «fashions that seek to modify it.»
