New Superior Picked by Sons of Divine Providence

ROME, JULY 11, 2004 (Zenit.org).- Father Flavio Peloso has become the seventh successor of St. Luigi Orione as director general of the Sons of Divine Providence congregation.

Born in Almisano di Longo, Italy, in 1952, Flavio Peloso has been a priest since 1979. He has a doctorate in liturgy from the International Institute of St. Anselm in Rome.

Father Peloso worked for five years in the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 1992 he became general counselor of the Sons of Divine Providence. In 1998 he was appointed secretary-general procurator and postulator of the cause of canonization of Don Orione (1872-1940).

He was chosen director general by the general chapter, meeting in Ariccia, Italy. The general chapter ends July 17.

Don Orione was canonized a saint May 16. The religious family he founded extends to more than 30 countries, and includes priests, men and women religious, and lay followers. Their mission includes care of the poor and disabled.
