WASHINGTON, D.C., JULY 25, 2004 (Zenit.org).- A Eucharistic Congress planned for this autumn in the nation’s capital takes its theme from John Paul II’s 2003 encyclical.
«Heaven Unites with Earth» is the theme of the congress, to be held Sept. 24-25, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) is sponsoring the event.
The theme, taken from the encyclical «Ecclesia de Eucharistia,» highlights the mystery of God’s communion with his people through the celebration of the mysteries of Christ in the sacrifice of the Eucharist and his presence in the Blessed Sacrament.
The congress precedes the start of the Year of the Eucharist called by John Paul II. The year begins with the International Eucharistic Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, scheduled for Oct. 10-17.
The two-day event will consist of a solemn celebration of the liturgy, catechesis, prayer, Eucharistic procession and adoration, and special activities designed for youth.
Cardinal Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia and episcopal liaison to the CMSWR, will convene the congress with a solemn vigil of prayer.
Speakers at the congress will include Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, D.C.; Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments; Cardinals James Francis Stafford, major penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary; and Sister Nirmala, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity.
