The Dec. 4 meeting is being organized by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.
The symposium will seek to deepen knowledge of the martyrology, the new edition of which was presented in October 2001 by the Vatican congregation.
With this symposium, entitled "'Roman Martyrology': Theology, Liturgy, Holiness," the Vatican congregation said it "hopes to encourage ever more mature reflection on holiness."
"All the faithful, regardless of their state or rank, are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity," the congregation said in a statement. "This holiness promotes, also in earthly society, a more human tenor of life."
The "Roman Martyrology" includes the names of the 6,538 saints and blessed recognized officially by the Catholic Church. It lists brief data on the place of their death, and their ecclesial status and charism.
During the day, manuscripts codices and famous printed editions of this liturgical book will be on display.
