Cardinal Marchisano, archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, replaces Cardinal Jan Pieter Schotte, who died Jan. 10.

Given Cardinal Marchisano’s new duties, the Pope named Archbishop Angelo Comastri as coadjutor to assist him as archpriest, as well as in his work as the Pope’s vicar general for Vatican City and president of Fabbrica di San Pietro, the office of the Vatican’s chief engineer. The Vatican press office announced the changes Saturday.

Archbishop Comastri is currently the archbishop of the Marian shrine in Loreto.

Two years ago, Archbishop Comastri preached the Lenten spiritual exercises to the Pope and the Roman Curia.
