Cardinal Juan Sandoval Íñiguez celebrated Mass today in Rome at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Philip Martyr. The Mass was attended by several thousand faithful present in Rome.

After remembering John Paul II, whom he described as «pastor» according to the heart of Christ, he requested the faithful’s prayers so that, in the conclave that begins on Monday, the man is elected whom God intends for the Church.

He must be a man of «unbreakable faith,» said the 72-year-old cardinal who will participate in the conclave.

The new pope must be a «prophet who proclaims» the «Risen Christ» to «this secularized and hedonistic world,» he added.

The next Pontiff must also be a «father,» «worthy representative of Christ, the Good Shepherd,» he concluded.
