Austria Decorates Monsignor Ratzinger

VATICAN CITY, MAY 20, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI watched as his brother received the first-class Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Culture in a ceremony in Paul VI Hall.

The cross was conferred Thursday on Monsignor Georg Ratzinger by the Austrian ambassador to the Holy See, Helmut Turk.

Heinz Fischer, Austria’s president, had awarded the cross to the monsignor last Dec. 7, before his brother’s election as Pope.

The award recognizes his cultural achievements as chapel master in Regensburg, Germany, scholar and composer of sacred music.
