Philip Hockerts explained today that the decision to hospitalize the 81-year-old priest was made by the doctors as a «precautionary measure.»

«It’s nothing serious, thank God, he is well,» said the spokesman without giving further details.

Monsignor Ratzinger was hospitalized Aug. 4 in Rome, while he was on a visit to his brother at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo. The monsignor was fitted with a pacemaker at that time.

The priest was music director of Regensburg Cathedral before retiring in 1994.
