Vatican Radio Gets a New Director General

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 6, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has appointed Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi the new director general of Vatican Radio.

Father Lombardi, 63, succeeds Father Pasquale Borromeo whom the Pope thanked for his long service to the station.

Father Lombardi, a native of Turin, Italy, has been director of Vatican Radio programs for the past 15 years. The Vatican press office announced his new job Saturday.

Jesuit Father Andrzej Koprowski has been named the new director of programs.

Vatican Radio’s new director general was born in Saluzzo, in northern Italy, on Aug. 29, 1942. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in 1960.

He obtained licentiates in philosophy and theology from Jesuits institutions, and a doctorate in mathematics from Turin University. He was ordained a priest in 1972.

Father Borromeo was a member of the College of Writers of Civiltà Cattolica, a review of which he was vice director in 1977. From 1984 to 1990 he was provincial superior of the Italian Province of the Society of Jesus.

Since 1991 he has been Vatican Radio’s Program director. And since 2001, he has also been director general of the Vatican’s Television Center.
