Benedict XVI Meets With Croatian President

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 10, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI met Saturday with the president of Croatia, Ivo Josipovic.

A Vatican communiqué noted that after the audience with the Pope, the president met with the Pontiff’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and the secretary for relations with states, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.

The communiqué noted that these «cordial discussions» included «a fruitful exchange of opinions on questions concerning the current situation in the region, with particular reference to the position of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina.»

As well, the parties discussed «certain aspects of the situation in Croatia itself, to the Church’s contribution to cultural and spiritual development, to the country’s path to full integration into the European Union, and to the importance of it maintaining its specific Christian identity.»
