Argentina to Mark Day of the Unborn Child

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, MARCH 21, 2011 (Zenit.org).- The bishops of Argentina are encouraging the faithful to observe the Day of the Unborn Child this Friday by participating in a Rosary for Life.

The rosary will take place March 25 at the Cathedral of Buenos Aires, led by Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires. A statement from the Episcopal Conference of Argentina said the event will be a moment to reflect on the “moral and juridical gravity” of abortion.

“We advance toward a common strategy to oppose abortion,” the statement added, “which for the Church is unacceptable.”

Former President Carlos Menem signed a declaration in 1998 that designated March 25 as the Day of the Unborn Child for Argentina

The bishops’ conference declared 2011 the “Year of Life” and said they will engage in actions to “defend” the unborn child and to oppose legalization of abortion, and to promote protection for pregnant women and for children who “grow up in poverty and marginalization.”
