A Catholic church has been burned down in northern Nigeria by a group of Muslim youth in protest of an examination question that allegedly attacked Muhammad, according to an Associated Press report.
A witness said soldiers stopped the mob from setting ablaze the school in Funtua town in Katsina state on Monday, but they arrived too late to save St. Rita Catholic Church. No one was injured in the incident.
Town members in Katsina State became angry over an examination last week which was allegedly insulting to Muhammad, the witness said. The young Muslims attacked the Church and school on Monday when no action was taken by district authorities.
Meanwhile, the online publication Premium Times reported that the youth set fire to a second church and “were attacking people and businesses indiscriminately.”
According to a report by AllAfrica.com, sources say a youth corps member serving with Ideal International Nursery and Primary School, Tudun Wada, had set the examinations for pupils.
The school had decided to cancel the examination due to the sensitive nature of the material. The school officials had hoped to keep the issue from the public, but it was leaked, leading to the attack.
The same source also reports that a young person was shot and seriously injured by police during the rampage. (D.A.S)
