The Pope spent his lunchtime today queuing up for food in the Vatican canteen and dining with Vatican staff.
Franco Piano, the chef, has reflected on Francis’ surprise visit there in an interview with Vatican Radio Friday.
“He was just like any other guest” and was so “humble,” he said, adding that he simply took his tray, his seat, and ate his pasta and cod.
Piano said various employees were introduced to him. The Pope asked about their work and extended some compliments.
Afterward, the Holy Father gave a blessing and posed for a photo with those present.
Saying how emotional of an experience it was, the chef added that “it is one of the most satisfying things that can happen to you in life.” (D.C.L.)
