At the conclusion of his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis once again renewed his appeal for peace in Ukraine.

The conflict between Ukraine and rebel forces continues to escalate, causing casualties on both sides. The Holy Father, noting the worsening situation and «fratricidal violence», called the faithful present to pray for the victims, many of whom are civilians, as well as their families.

«I renew my heartbroken appeal that every effort be made – also at the international level – for the resumption of dialogue, the only possible way to bring about peace and harmony in that martyred land.»

Departing from his prepared remarks, the 78 year old Pontiff said that hearing the words «victory» or «defeat» causes him pain and sadness.

«They are not the right words. The only right word is peace! This is the only right word!»

Concluding his appeal, Pope Francis, visibly moved, addressed the Ukrainian people directly saying that this «is a war among Christians.»

«You have your Baptism, you are fighting among Christians! Thinks about this, this scandal!» he exclaimed. «Let us pray so that prayer may be our protest in front of God in times of war.»
