Pope Francis is mourning the tragic Church shooting in Burkino Faso.
In a tweet by the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti expressed Francis’ grief.
“The Holy Father,” it noted, “has learned with sorrow about the news of the attack on the church in Dablo, Burkina Faso. He prays for the victims, for their families and for the entire Christian community in the country.”
According to Vatican News, faithful leaving church at around 9 a.m., some 200 kilometers north of the capital, Ouagadougou, in the small town of Dablo, some 20 suspected jihadists on scooters encircled the church. The terrorists followed and killed Fr. Simeon Yampa, in charge of interreligious dialogue in his diocese, selected and shot five faithful, and burned the Church.
While about a quarter of Burkina Faso’s population is Christian, mostly Catholic, almost 60 percent is Muslim.
