“American actor and director Robert Redford, winner of two Oscars, was also present,” at Wednesday’s General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, reported L’Osservatore Romano on December 5, 2019.

Vatican Media photos show a quick exchange between Pope Francis and Robert Redford, who is four months older than the Pontiff. Redford was bor

n on August 18, 1936 (he is 83) and Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936. They share in common warnings about the dangers our “Common Home” is facing.

The American actor is regarded as a pioneer denouncer in the field of the planet’s conservation. In 1981 he created an Institute for the Management of Natural Resources and, in 1989, he organized a bilateral Conference between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) on global warming.

After the success of the movie “Two Men and a Destiny,” Redford purchased a ski area in Utah, which he called “Sundance,” in honor of his character in the film.

His Sundance Institute promotes the American Independent Film Festival, launched in the ‘80s. “My commitment to climate change began 40 years ago,” explained Robert Redford. “If we want to avoid the worst scenario, we must act with daring and immediately, even in the face of indifference, apathy and opposition,” he said.
