Pope Francis Appoints Former Priest as Secretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life

Gleison De Paula Souza, a secularized priest, is Brazilian but resides in Italy.

(ZENIT News / Rome, 17.11.2022).- Published on Thursday, November 17, was the appointment of the new Secretary of the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life. The person the Pope appointed is a former priest: Gleison De Paula Souza, Professor of the Catholic Religion at the “A. Vallone” State Scientific and Linguistic High School of Galatina, Italy. 

De Paula Souza was born on May 14, 1984 in the State of Minas Geiras, Brazil. He obtained  a Licentiate in Theology from the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome, Italy, in 2015, and a Master’s in Philosophical Sciences in 2019, from the University of Salento in Lecce, Italy. From 2005 to 2016 he was a member of the Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza [Little Work of Divine Providence] Congregation, where he received priestly Ordination but later requested dispensation or secularization. Brazilian by birth, he resides in Italy where he has worked as Professor of the Catholic Religion at the “A. Vallone” State Scientific and Linguistic High School of Galatina, Italy. He is married and is the father of two daughters.
