(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 01.03.2024).- On the morning of Wednesday, December 3, Pope Francis had a private audience with the German Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the former private secretary of Benedict XVI. The audience took place on the occasion of the first anniversary of Benedict XVI’s death. Archbishop Gänswein was accompanied at the audience by the four consecrated laywomen who were responsible for the care of the Pope Emeritus.

A few days earlier, on the morning of December 31, Archbishop Gänswein had presided over the memorial Mass for Benedict XVI in St. Peter’s Basilica. He was accompanied at the Mass by two cardinals: Müller and Koch.

Exactly one year earlier, the controversy over the book published by Archbishop Georg was in full swing, eventually leading to his expulsion from the Vatican by Pope Francis, without a specific assignment, since July 2022.
