(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 02.14.2024).- Candidate for the presidency of Mexico, Xóchitl Gálvez, was received in a private audience by Pope Francis on Tuesday, February 13, at the Vatican. The meeting was confirmed to ZENIT by a person from Pope Francis’ team. On the same day, the candidate of the Coalition “Strength and Heart for Mexico” (formed by the PAN, PRI, and PRD parties) visited St. Peter’s Basilica.

In addition to her family, Gálvez was accompanied by former congressman Santiago Creel. The pre-candidate arrived in Rome from Madrid, where she held a working meeting with the business world.

According to NMAS correspondent Valentina Alazraki, Pope Francis would also receive Claudia Sheinbaum, the other presidential candidate of Mexico, this same week.

The reason why the Holy See has not issued an official statement is that these are private audiences that the Pope arranges personally. In fact, the arrangement for the meeting with Xóchitl Gálvez did not go through the Mexican embassy to the Vatican. It would be expected that after the Pope’s meeting with Sheinbaum, the Vatican media outlets might publish something on their portals, but not a statement from the Press Office. This has not happened in the past when the Pope has met in similar ways with candidates from other countries.
