(ZENIT News / Jerusalem, 04.08.2025) – The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, ecclesiastical circumscription of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, has warned that the e-mail address cardinal.pizzaballa@gmail.com is being used by a hacker impersonating Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

«Please note that this is not his official email address. If you have received any e-mail from this address, do not respond, do not click on it, or share personal information,» they say in a press release.

In the last two years, there have been various extortion attempts using Artificial Intelligence, for example, through voice impersonation or contacting monasteries, seminaries, or charities through phone calls or even WhatsApp. The use of e-mail has been another such method. In this fraud attempt, the names of Bishops from Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and Italy have been used in the past. Added now with this case is one from the Middle East.
