Monsignor Walter Brandmüller, society president, told ZENIT of the planned dictionary, «which will be published by Schöning, a distinguished German editor.»

The society is meeting here through Monday. The meeting is attracting some 20 historians and university professors from Europe and the United States.

Monsignor Brandmüller said the group has published 28 volumes on the history of Church councils and that, since 1969, has published the yearbook «History of the Councils.»

To understand the Church, it is important to understand the history of the councils, said Monsignor Brandmüller, who is also president of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences.

These studies make it possible to highlight forgotten aspects, the monsignor said. For example, he said, historians often do not mention the ecumenical Council of Pavia-Siena (1423-1424), which confirmed the authority of the pope over the councils.
