<br> A telegram, sent by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano to Archbishop Carlo Caffarra of Bologna, expressed the Pope’s «spiritual closeness» to those who were affected by the accident, as well as to the «whole Italian nation in these hours of anguish.»
The Holy Father assured his prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased and invoked «the consolation of heaven» for those who mourn the loss of loved ones.
According to initial investigations, the cause of the accident between Verona and Bologna was «human error» in rail traffic indications.
