Benedict XVI Mourns for Cardinal Scheffczyk

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 9, 2005 (ZENIT.org).- Benedict XVI received with «great sadness» the news of the death of Cardinal Leo Scheffczyk, who died Thursday in Munich. He was 85.

In a telegram of condolence sent to the archbishop of Munich, the Pope said that Cardinal Scheffczyk dedicated his priestly and scientific life «with tireless zeal, to theological understanding and the proclamation of the truth of God.»

«With his fidelity to the faith, with his human qualities and with his modesty, he will remain as a luminous example for his students and for many faithful,» the Holy Father wrote.

The cardinal was a retired professor dogmatic theology at the University of Munich, an internationally renowned theologian and Mariologist, and author of more than 1,000 publications on questions of Church doctrine.

In recognition of his theological work, he was elevated to cardinal in February 2001.

With his death, the College of Cardinals now has a total of 179 members, including 111 electors who could participate in a conclave.
