(ZENIT News / Rome, 06.14.2023).- June 19, 2023 marks the commemoration of the 400 years of the birth of the French scientist Blaise Pascal. In that context, the I-MEDIA Agency revealed that the publication is foreseen of an Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis.
The initiative wouldn’t be extraordinary: on March 25, 2021, the Holy Father published an Apostolic Letter dedicated to Dante Alighieri, entitled Candor Lucis Aeternae [Splendour of Light Eternal].
Pascal (1623-1662) was distinguished for his mastery of Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy; through the latter he delved into Theology. Widely known are Pascal’s “Pensées,” an author who contrastingly was the object of confrontation on the part of the Jesuits of his time. This fact is outstanding given that Pope Francis also belongs to that men’s Religious Congregation.
Moreover, according to statements of the former Director of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, deceased Eugenio Scalfari, Pope Francis commented to him in 2017 that he was in favour of Pascal’s Beatification.
