(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 05.20.2024).- The Holy See Press Office officially announced on the morning of Monday, May 20th, that Pope Francis will visit Belgium and Luxembourg in September 2024.

«Accepting the invitation of the respective Heads of State and ecclesiastical authorities, the Holy Father Francis will make an apostolic journey to Luxembourg on September 26th, and to Belgium from September 26th to 29th, visiting Brussels, Leuven, and Louvain-la-Neuve,» the statement reads.

Back in December 2023, ZENIT reported on the Belgian episcopate’s announcement of the Pope’s visit to the country on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the University of Leuven. Just a few days ago, the Archbishop of Luxembourg also hinted at the Pope’s visit to the Grand Duchy.

However, between December 2023 and May 2024, various sectors have contested the Pope’s visit to Belgium due to the issue of abuses, specifically related to the emeritus bishop of Bruges, and also because of the progressive stance of the Belgian episcopate.

This trip will take place just two weeks after the Pope’s return from Indonesia and Timor.
