NEWCASTLE, Australia, APRIL 4, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Father William Wright, 58, of the Archdiocese of Sydney as bishop of Maitland-Newcastle.
The Vatican announced today the Pope’s appointment as well as his acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Michael Malone, 71, the former bishop of that diocese.
In response to this news, Bishop Malone released a statement affirming, «After considerable discernment, I believe it is time for a new leader with fresh energy and vision who can take the diocese to a new stage of renewal.»
He added, «The deep faith of so many people, the immense generosity of those who serve the Church in professional and voluntary capacities, the initiatives taken by individuals and groups to address areas of real need, the determination to rise above scandal and shame — all these promise support and encouragement to my successor.»
Bishop-elect Wright was ordained a priest in 1977. He has been serving most recently as parish priest of All Saints Liverpool.
The Maitland-Newcastle Diocese has 157,000 Catholics, 70 priests, 9 permanent deacons and 236 religious.
