ZACATECAS, Mexico, AUG. 24, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The cathedral in the north-central Diocese of Zacatecas is being made another sanctuary of life for the Mexican nation.
The project of making the cathedral a sanctuary for life will be completed this month.
Mexico has been embroiled in debates on life issues raised by the leftist government of the Mexico City Federal District: In 2007, abortion was legalized in the capital, and just this month, adoption was defended for homosexual couples.
The Zacatecas cathedral will continue to be a locus for Masses and rosaries, prayer and special offerings, as well as conferences on the issue of life.
Bishop Carlos Cabrero Romero of Zacatecas noted in a communiqué that from now on women living in difficult situations will have a point of reference in the cathedral, where they can go not only to ask for the help of the sacrament of reconciliation, but also to receive another type of spiritual, moral and also material support, to help them choose against abortion.
The cathedral will offer the noon Mass on the 8th and 25th of every month for pregnant women and those who have sought help in the cathedral, as well as those who go to give thanks for their children.
It is hoped that women who are pregnant will also go to the cathedral for a blessing, described by the bishop in this way: «That the mothers tucking their children in their arms see themselves blessed, and that these children will be able to walk with their mothers along the journey of life.»
In the new sanctuary, the communiqué added, prayers will be offered «for all women who have had an abortion, whether voluntary or involuntary, [and here they will] find a place where they can be supported, and the cathedral will be for them, for all women, whether Catholic or not, a place of hospitality and reception.»
