Cardinal Of Havana Says 83% Of Cubans Are Believers

MADRID, MAY 17, 2002 (Zenit.org).-The Archbishop of Havana relates that his country is experiencing a spiritual rebirth after John Paul II´s visit in January of 1998.

In statements to TMT, the television channel of the Archdiocese of Madrid, the Cuban Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega explained that the laity plays a key role in this rebirth. «At present there are 250 mission and prayer houses in the Cuban capital,» he said.

The Cardinal added, «83% of Cubans say they are believers.»

As regards the situation in the Caribbean Island, Cardinal Ortega said: «the Catholic Church will never be belligerent; we must struggle to express always what is our right, trying to listen to the other, even if he thinks differently.»
