In statements published today in the Italian newspaper Avvenire, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that given the seriousness of the situation «the Church must pray at this time.»
«We hope that the governments involved will be able to sense this desire for peace that is felt in the world, because it must be peoples who together opt for peace,» the cardinal said. Both nations have nuclear weapons.
«If peoples´ thirst for peace is sufficiently alive, the path of diplomacy will find a solution,» he added. «Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that at present fanaticism seems to be very alive.»
