«As a Colombian, I am very happy because things have been taken seriously,» Bishop Julio César Vidal of Monteria said over Caracol Radio. «Not only is there a desire but a decision to contribute to Colombia’s peace.»

The bishop, who observes the negotiations between the two sides, said the government delegates stressed the respect for human rights and the extension of a cease-fire ordered by the Self-Defense Units of Colombia (AUC) beginning Dec. 1.

The meeting took place Thursday somewhere in northern Colombia.
