Officials are investigating the death of Father Sanjeevananda Swami, 52, of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka. He died last Tuesday, Fides reported Saturday.

Fides said the priest had been threatened in the past by Hindu extremists, although investigators are not excluding disputes caused by neighbors.

Father Swami had his archbishop’s permission to live in the hermitage. He was buried in Palai, a city in the state of Kerala, where he was born. He was ordained in 1993.
