Sister Nirmala was visiting centers run by her congregation in Jharkhand state when about two dozen bandits began stopping buses and cars and robbing people, said Inspector-General Rajiv Kumar, the state’s police chief, according to the Associated Press.
Several priests and nuns were accompanying the nun, a newspaper in Calcutta reported.
Paramilitary soldiers chased the bandits through dense forests and opened fire. Two of the attackers were injured but managed to escape, Kumar told the AP.
The congregation said Sister Nirmala was unhurt.
