To date, 41 people have died and more than 124,000 have been displaced, including 10,000 in Luabo and Marromeu, the two hardest hit cities.
The Mozambican bishops´ conference appealed for help for the flood victims in this southern African nation of 19 million people.
Cardinal Alexandre José Maria dos Santos, archbishop of Maputo, made the following appeal through the Vatican missionary agency Fides: “The Archdiocese of Maputo considers urgent the construction of new homes for those affected by the floods, leaving them homeless, but we also must address the problem of the cathedral, which, because of the torrential rains, is in a really deplorable state.”
