Archbishop Named for Sherbrooke, Quebec

SHERBROOKE, Quebec, JULY 26, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Luc Cyr of Valleyfield the metropolitan archbishop of Sherbrooke.

The 57-year-old Quebec native had been the bishop of Valleyfield for just over 10 years. He succeeds Archbishop André Gaumond, 75.

The Archdiocese of Sherbrooke has a large majority of Catholics (some 304,000 out of 338,000 residents). They are served by more than 260 priests and nearly 1,000 religious.
