Bush Broadens Ban on Aid to Pro-Abortion Groups

CRAWFORD, Texas, AUG. 31, 2003 (ZENIT.org).- President George W. Bush expanded a ban on U.S. aid to overseas groups that perform or advocate abortion or lobby governments to ease access to the procedure, reports Agence France-Presse.

Bush’s action Friday extended a March 2001 order in which he blocked aid from the U.S. Agency for International Development to foreign non-governmental organizations that support abortion, AFP said.

The new move extends the ban to most U.S. State Department family planning aid outside USAID. Bush exempted from the ban funds earmarked to fight the spread of AIDS under a law passed earlier this year.
