Embrace Between Italy, Cuba and Holy See in Name of Athletics

Cuban athletes took part in the General Audience

Today, Wednesday May 2, 2018, there was a historic ‘sporting’ embrace between Cuba, Italy and Athletica Vaticana, the representative of the athletics of the Holy See.
According to a press release of the Pontifical Council for Culture, the legendary champion Javier Sotomayor, the best high jumper of all time, and Fabrizio Donato, captain of the Italian national athletics team, were welcomed at the Pontifical Council for Culture, under whom, the Secretariat of State has placed Vatican Athletics.
Cuban athletes took part in the General Audience of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square. Later they went to the Pontifical Council for Culture.
The Cuban delegation also included Luis Enrique Zayas, world champion ‘under 20′ in high jump, and coach Bárbaro Diaz Castro.
Present with Fabrizio Donato, captain of the Italian national athletics team, was Andrea Ceccarelli, technical director of the Fiamme Gialle sports group. To welcome the Cuban and Italian athletes were Msgr. Melchor Sánchez de Toca, Under-Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, together with a delegation from Athletica Vaticana.
The meeting took place at 12 p.m. in the Pontifical Council for Culture on Via della Conciliazione.
