Paraguay Bishops: Elections Won´t Help Right Now

ASUNCION, Paraguay, MAR. 30, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Paraguay´s Catholic bishops are opposed to the calling of presidential elections at this time, in order not “to waste more money.”

They also warned the government of President Luis González Macchi about the possibility of social upheaval, if rural workers claims are not addressed.

Bishop Mario Melanio Medina, of San Juan Diocese, said, “We bishops in no way want new elections to be called, because they will only serve to waste more money and … time; moreover, elections would create a new division among Paraguayans.”
